Men of North Western Front's First Shock Army patrol the edges of the Ramushevo corridor between the main German lines and the Demiansk pocket. It was through this gap in the lines that supplies were moved as well as the air bridge. A breakout attempt widened this corridor in late March. Very little of the terrain in this region was as open as seen here. (From the fonds of the RGAKFD at Krasnogorsk via Nik Cornish)

Towards the end of the encirclement of Demiansk a JU 52 transport plane takes on a load of wounded including an SS stretcher case. It was the success of this airlift that encouraged Hitler and Goering cheerfully to promise the same level of support to Sixth Army in Stalingrad nine months later. However, over 100 JU 52 aircraft were lost. The Kholm and Demiansk pockets only required 265 tons of supplies, whereas Sixth Army required 800. Furthermore, North Western Front's air strength and anti-aircraft capabilities were low. (Nik Cornish at Stavka)
